They’ll have their chance Weeks 7 and 8 though.Īfter opening up the conference slate with a 23-3 road victory over Kent State, Miami hosts Bowling Green this weekend. Miami’s close on their tails, and if they hadn’t gotten beaten so bad Week 1, they might be right there. It’s clear who the two top dogs of the MAC are. They crushed Bowling Green last week, 38-7. So far, the Bobcats are holding opponents to under 70 rushing yards per game and fewer than 250 total yards. Ohio returns all but two starters from that unit, including last year’s MAC Player of the Year, quarterback Kurtis Rourke. That offense led the conference last season with over 420 yards over 30 points per game. Last year, offense was their calling card, but allowing 17 combined points in those two games is impressive. Week 2, they beat Florida Atlantic 17-10, and Week 3, they beat Iowa State 10-7. The team that Toledo beat in the MAC Championship last season poses a major challenge as well.Ī highly touted team to begin with, Ohio has already pulled off two upsets this season. The defense is stout and makes big plays. Their offense is explosive and laden with threats. They have eight takeaways through four games. Their defense is holding opponents to under four yards per carry. Miami golf wins the Mid-American Conference championship. Running behind it, junior Peny Boone is averaging 7.7 yards per carry, including over 200 yards and two touchdowns against Western Michigan last week. MAC tournament championship and earn its first NCAA tournament berth. Toledo’s offensive line returns four starters. So far this year, he’s thrown four interceptions through four games but also recorded 10 touchdowns. The regular season will end on March 17, 2024, with the 2024 NCAA Division I mens basketball tournament beginning with the First Four on March 19 and ending with the championship game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale on April 8. Its quarterback, dual-threat Dequan Finn, went for nearly 3000 total yards last season and 32 touchdowns. The 202324 NCAA Division I mens basketball season began on November 6, 2023. Toledo returns 16 starters from its 2022 MAC Championship-winning squad, including seven all-conference selections. Then Toledo won its next three games, including a 71-3 thumping of Texas Southern. The Rockets barely lost to Illinois Week 1 (and as you can see above, the Illini spend a whole lot more on football). If the RedHawks can take care of business Weeks 5 through 7, the first true test of their mettle is against Toledo. They finish the schedule hosting Buffalo then traveling to Ball State. Then the RedHawks play the two favorites, at home against Toledo and on the road at Ohio. The conference office will release a full men’s basketball television schedule in October.Miami starts its schedule against three of the four teams with the lowest odds at the 2023 MAC Championship, at Kent State, hosting Bowling Green and at Western Michigan. Bowling Green, Ohio (2003) Detroit, Michigan (2004present) The MAC Football Championship Game is a football game between the winners of the East and West divisions of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) to determine the conference champion. The men's basketball regular season will conclude on Friday, March 8 with the top eight teams in the conference moving on to Cleveland’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse for the MAC Men’s Basketball Tournament on March 14-16. MAC Men's Basketball teams will play 18 games over 10 weeks (nine home, nine away). The conference season is set to tip-off on Tuesday, Jan. I tried asking the DM about crusader, but he pointed out that. * Languages: Elves begin play speaking Common and Sylvan. I was wondering about your thoughts on ways to keep weight down on my items/weapons. Some of the scrolls are worth buying, particularly if your Mage is at or near level 18 since you won't come across them again for a long time. Now were near the end of 'Whispering cairn' and looking round on recent encounters i asked our DM to retrain my elven bow-oriented fighter (i planned to take Arcane Archer) to warblade before we start 'Three faces of evil'. The other items are nothing special - the only reason that you might want to spend that sort of money on the Warblade is to get a +4 weapon for Minsc. Our 6-player party recently started Age of Worms campaign. My problem is coming up with a backstory or personality that doesnt feel like generic human with generic warblade roleplaying hints tacked on. * Weapon Familiarity: Elves are proficient with longbows (including composite longbows), longswords, rapiers, and shortbows (including composite shortbows), and treatĪny weapon with the word “elven” in its name as a martial weapon. Comment by Thottbot Sindorei Warblade: 18.2 dps +10 strength +4 stamina Blood-Tempered Ranseur: 19.7 dps +6 strength +9 stamina +6 intellect The polearm has better damage, as the 4 strength doesnt make anything near 1.5 dps and gives more health and mana, being 5 stamina and 6 int more. Im having a dilemma, I think I have finally come up with a character that I plan to stick with, a Grey Elf Warblade/Eternal Blade (Starting at Warblade 4). * Keen Senses: Elves receive a +2 racial bonus on Listen, Spot and Search skill checks. * Elven Immunities: Elves are immune to magic sleep effects and get a +2 racial saving throw bonus against enchantment spells and effects. * Low-Light Vision: Elves can see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. * Normal Speed: Elves have a base speed of 30 feet. * Medium: Elves are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size. * +2 Dexterity, +2 Intelligence, –2 Constitution: Elves are nimble, both in body and mind, but their form is frail. Dex is good, but it hardly compensates for lost Con. High Elf - These are a little better than grey elves, but not by much. Literacy Purchased at Level 1 for 2 Skill points. Realtime Stats - The technology was first used in finance to show stock exchange information so it’s no surprise that the technology is now used more than ever.Real-time Web technologies are making it possible to build all sorts of engaging functionality, leading to improved user experiences. How are Real-Time Technologies being used? It can be a massive resource saving to the server and client, with the latter being particularly important for mobile devices where battery power is extremely valuable. Older solutions could only achieve two-way communication using two connections so the fact the WebSockets use a single connection is actually a big deal. WebSockets represent a stardardized API and protocol that allows realtime server and client (web browser) two way communication over a single connection. Our prayers have finally been answered with HTML5 WebSockets. But this didn’t remove the fact that there was a requirement to be able to do this in a cross-browser and standardised way. WebSocketsĮarlier on I stated that previous solutions to let servers instantly push data to Web browsers were considered “hacks”. Facebook, with it’s real-time wall (and later other realtime features) and Twitter with it’s activity stream centric user interface, and focus on conversation, demonstrated how Web applications could be highly engaging. Although applications had become more dynamic through the use of JavaScript, the experiences were seldom truly interactive. Increased User ExpectationsĪs more users moved to using applications such as Twitter and Facebook, and the user experiences that they deliver, their perception of what can be expected from a Web application changed. This idea of Publish/Subscribe is core to the real-time Web, especially when building Web applications. There are now platforms that not only make our data instantly discoverable but also instantly deliver it to those who have declared an interest. Gone are the days where we have to wait an eternity for Google to find our data (blog posts, status updates, images). Social media, and specifically Twitter, has meant that more and more data is becoming instantly available. In my opinion there are a number of factors that have moved real-time Web technologies to the forefront of Web application development. In 2006 these solutions were given an umbrella term called Comet, but even with a defined name the solutions were still considered hacks. These initial solutions were classed as “hacks”. They were mainly used by companies building software targeted at the financial services sector or in Web chat applications. Why Should We Care About The Real-Time Web?Īlthough the Real-Time Web is a relatively recent mainstream phrase, real-time Web technologies have been around for over 10 years. In this tutorial, I’ll show how to convert a basic blog commenting system into a real-time engaging experience where you’ll see a comment made in one browser window “magically” appear in a second window. Building A Real-Time Retrospective Board With Video Chat.Real-Time Data And A More Personalized Web.Improve User Experience With Real-Time Features. The focus at Pusher, for example, is to let you concentrate on building your real-time Web applications by offering a hosted API which makes it quick and easy to add scalable real-time functionality to Web and mobile apps. But don’t worry, there is a solution.Ĭloud hosted Web services and APIs have come to the rescue of many a developer over the past few years, and real-time functionality is no different. However, setting up and maintaining the server-side real-time components can be an unwanted distraction. This trend is set to continue with the next generation of applications driven by the real-time Web.Īdding real-time functionality to an application can result in a more interactive and engaging user experience. While exact models often scale poorly as the amount of data increases, multiple approximation methods have been developed which often retain good accuracy while drastically reducing computation time. As for the fourier transform I mean the magnitude spectra (not including DC) of the realization of the random process, for example uniform distribution noise process, gaussian noise process. Such quantities include the average value of the process over a range of times and the error in estimating the average using sample values at a small set of times. Random processes generated by independent random variables are independent and thus uncorrelated. For pure white noise B extends to infinity, but that doesn't prohibit. This information can be estimated from the PDF of stress amplitude of rainflow-counted cycles. Damage rate is a function of stress amplitude and the corresponding number of stress cycles observed in unit time, as expressed in Eq. (Since the noise density is flat in frequency as white, we can simply multiply by B to get the total power as given by E x(t)2. Frequency-domain methods for gaussian random processes2.2.1. For example, if a random process is modelled as a Gaussian process, the distributions of various derived quantities can be obtained explicitly. Where B is the bandwidth, and E stands for expectation and the process x(t) is the white noise process described in OP. Gaussian processes are useful in statistical modelling, benefiting from properties inherited from the normal distribution. Gaussian processes can be seen as an infinite-dimensional generalization of multivariate normal distributions. The first problem consists of clarifying the conditions for mutual. In the study of random variables, the Gaussian random variable is clearly the most commonly used and of most importance. Miller, Donald Childers, in Probability and Random Processes, 2004 3.3 The Gaussian Random Variable. The concept of Gaussian processes is named after Carl Friedrich Gauss because it is based on the notion of the Gaussian distribution ( normal distribution). The book deals mainly with three problems involving Gaussian stationary processes. Random Variables, Distributions, and Density Functions. The distribution of a Gaussian process is the joint distribution of all those (infinitely many) random variables, and as such, it is a distribution over functions with a continuous domain, e.g. every finite linear combination of them is normally distributed. A Gaussian process is one for which the multivariate distributions Pn(xn, x n1,, x 1) are Gaussians for all n. Martingales are only brie y discussed in the treatment of conditional expectation. The nal noticeably absent topic is martingale theory. The emphasis of this book is on general properties of random processes rather than the speci c properties of special cases. In probability theory and statistics, a Gaussian process is a stochastic process (a collection of random variables indexed by time or space), such that every finite collection of those random variables has a multivariate normal distribution, i.e. particular examples of random processes: Gaussian and Poisson processes. Here is a screenshot from a Word 97 (yes, Word 97) session: A screen shot of Word 97 (running under Wine on Linux), and faking a nonbreaking en rule using a stretched nonbreaking hyphen and a change of font. If it is not a good visual match to the en rule, and you can be bothered, try changing fonts and experimenting until it looks good. Highlight it, choose Ctrl+D and then use the Scale option to make it wider until it is the length of an en dash. Instead of an en rule, insert a nonbreaking hyphen. Option 3 (works at least as far back as Word 97!) So, if on early versions of Word, Option 3 may be best (or only), poor as it is. They sure like capitalising everything! No- Width Non Break.Ĭaveat: The N o- W idth N on B reak is present in Word 2010 (and maybe earlier), but does not actually work, at least in my experience. If you need it regularly you can assign a shortcut to it. Option 2 (the better one, as suggested by Daniel)Īfter typing/inserting the en dash, go to Insert and then Symbols and select Special Characters and choose No-Width Non Break. Nonbreaking en dash between 14 and 34 using a 1% width nonbreaking space. The nonbreaking space after the en dash does not break on either side, so fixes the problem. It does not accept 0%, but a space 1% of the width of a normal one is close enough to invisible. Go to Advanced, then select the Scale drop-down menu and type something like 1%. Type ’15– 34′ where the gap after the dash is a nonbreaking space (Ctrl-Shift-Space in Windows) and then select the nonbreaking space and type Ctrl+D (or go to the Font menu from the Home ribbon). It seems that at some point Microsoft changed the behaviour of some special characters/codes in Word or in Word’s file format. I cannot speak for 2013 versions or versions on Mac. They do work in Word 2016 (in my experience) and later. So… Note that these options do not work in versions of Word up to and including Word 2010. But, Word does the breaking after the en dash. If you are in Word and type ’15–34′, the ’34’ can end up on the next line – the en dash is breaking. June Casagrande is the author of “The Best Punctuation Book, Period.” She can be reached at our coverage by becoming a digital subscriber.I call them en rules, but I’m out-voted on that one.Īnyway, in line with one commenter on this post, I’ll point out how it can be done. On a PC, hold down control and press the minus sign on a number pad. To make an en dash on a Mac, hold down the option key then press the hyphen key. They’re also used in place of hyphens to connect numbers with words or prefixes, like pre–1800, and for ranges and sports scores, like “the Dolphins won 10–7.” But a hyphen can do all these jobs nicely if you’re not working in an en dash world. For example, they can connect two terms that already have hyphens in them, like in a semi-private–semi-public entity. Old-school newswires couldn’t transmit them properly and so en dashes never became part of news editing style.īook and magazine publishing will use an en dash, which is longer than a hyphen but shorter than an em dash, as a sort of uber hyphen. In most newswriting, they don’t exist at all. They connect words with other words, numbers, prefixes and suffixes to create terms like “forward-looking” or “pre-1950” or “full-time” or “e-reader.” You can use them to build your own multiword adjectives, as in a “true-crime obsession.” Some terms already contain hyphens in their proper spelling, which you can find in a dictionary, as in “good-looking” and “jack-of-all-trades.”Įn dashes, which work more like hyphens than like em dashes, are rare. Unlike em dashes, hyphens are not sentence punctuation. All these systems offer other ways to make em dashes, too. In many word processing programs, you can just type two hyphens then the space bar and auto correct will make an em dash for you. On a PC with a number pad, you can type the minus key while holding down the control and alt keys. To make an em dash on a Mac computer, you type the hyphen key while holding down the shift and option keys. Book and magazine publishing usually omit the spaces-their dashes touch the word on either side. News publications usually put a space on either side of an em dash - making it sort of float. A period or possibly a semicolon would be better. Personally, I consider it a mistake to use an em dash between complete clauses - this sentence is an example. You can even use em dashes for dialogue, datelines or taglines or to show that speech was cut off mid-sentence. They can also set off lists of items - names, places, things - mid-sentence or at the end. Or you can use em dashes to set off parenthetical thoughts - and who doesn’t love those? - in a sentence. But if your sentence already has enough commas or if you want to create visual emphasis - like this - you can use em dashes to signal a change in sentence structure or thought. |
